"It's the definition of personal": Bexar Dems hire Tim Maloney to pursue stolen $$ trail

The Bexar County Democratic Party has turned to attorney and old political ally Tim Maloney to pursue the individual(s) responsible for the theft of more than $200,000 in primary-election funds. Former Party Chair Carla Vela revealed the missing funds last week as she stepped down to run for County Clerk.

"The Maloney family has a vested stake in this," he told the Current, noting that he, his father, and brothers have been major local Democratic "underwriters" for decades.

Maloney said that his clients will file a civil suit against BCDP Treasurer Dwayne Adams, who  looks like the main culprit in the theft -- although, says Maloney, not necessarily the only one.

While cautioning that he is just beginning to research the case, Maloney said that based on paperwork he has seen, it appears Adams funneled funds from three different BCDP accounts into a Texas Presidential Inaugural Ball account that Adams opened. When the original BCDP accounts -- including the account that held the missing primary-election money -- were opened at Laredo National Bank, checks written on them required two signatures. Compass Bank eventually acquired Laredo National Bank. One of the many questions Maloney and Interim Chair Roberto Flores want answered is how Adams was able to funnel funds from dual-signature accounts into an account he was able to control himself. They expect documents from Compass Bank to shed light on the issue.

"We put them on notice yesterday," Maloney said. "We're gonna pursue the investigation wherever the facts lead."

The Express-News reports today that Texas Democratic leaders have pledged to cover the BCDP's gap -- which includes a six-figure outstanding bill with the Bexar County Elections department. And a good thing, too. Maloney says it's unlikely that the party will recover the money from Adams ("zero, flat out no chance in hell"), but "We will make sure that follows him the rest of his life.

"Hell hath no fury like a Democrat pissed."
