San Antonio Beer Week starts Sunday

The Texas Legislature, with a few exceptions, may not know anything about Texasí growing thirst for homegrown beer, but San Antonians get it. Thatís why folks will be turning out for craft beer-centric drinks and eats beginning this Sunday, May 15, and running through Sunday, May 22.

The first San Antonio Beer Week, which coincides with the American Craft Beer Week, has something for everyone ó even beer and dessert pairings for those with an adventurous sweet tooth.

Starting at noon on Sunday, the Pearl is host to the event Burgers, BBQ & Beer. Officially, this is a wrap-up family event for Culinaria Wine and Culinary Arts Festival, but SABW condones this mix of family fun, backyard food, and craft beer to wash it down. Advance tickets are at culinariasa.org.

Yours truly has teamed up with Alís Gourmet Nuts at the Culinaria event to talk about the joys of great beer and food.

Monday features a tutorial on beer styles (including samplings!) with certified Cicerone Brian Tarver at H-E-B Alon Market at 6 p.m. A sampling of local artisanal cheeses paired with the adventurous beers of Freetail Brewing follows at 7 p.m.

Tuesday marks the first of two trips on the Blue Star bus from Blue Star Brewing Co. to the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner. The bus leaves at 9 a.m. for the oldest independent brewery in Texas.

Also on Tuesday, homebrewers from around the city will be letting folks sample home brews, and Alamo Golden Ale will be on hand as host of the Brew It Up San Antonio event on land near the Hays Street Bridge that could be the future home of their brewery.

Wednesday is Blue Star day with two ticketed events, including an afternoon tasting with Brian Tarver and an evening presentation of the annual Kingís Feast barleywine-style ale tasting with five chef-prepared courses.

The introduction of the Cinco Pils also happens with a special glass on Wednesday night at the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium. Cinco Pils involved brewers and ingredients from all five San Antonio area breweries.

Thursday brings the Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling beers out to play at Boardwalk on Bulverde, where five food trucks will be on hand.

Friday is Faust Brewing Co. night in New Braunfels where you can be among the first to try three new house-made beers and the introduction of a fantastic food menu. A.J.ís Alehouse down the street also is tapping up to 25 Texas beers for New Braunfels visitors to try.

Saturday brings a five-brewery pub crawl by chartered bus and four other events (so far) about town.

Sunday centers around Ranger Creek, where folks will gather for great food, beer, and announcing the winner of the first Sippy Cup homebrew competition.
