THE SOUND & THE FURY
(a week on the scene)
Earlier this month, local pop-punk quartet the Offbeats celebrated the release of their new album, Standards, with a show at Limelight. On Friday, August 22, the band returns to the club as part of an acoustic package called San Antonio Unplugged. They’ll be joined by Venomous Heartbeats, George & Jeff, Erica Gutierrez from Ledaswan, and singer-songwriter Azul, who has considerable solo-acoustic experience to fall back on.
This weekend also marks the beginning of Buttercup’s late-summer conquest of red-state America, beginning with a tightly condensed series of Texas shows. On Thursday, August 21, at 7 p.m., the artsy pop foursome will play at the SA Botanical Garden. Immediately after completing that set, they’ll haul their gear to Casbeers at the Church for a gig with the Dallas band I Love Math (featuring alumni of the Deathray Davies and Old 97s).
The Old 97s connection also comes into play the following night when the Cup teams up with Old 97s producer Salim “The Anti-Justin-Timberlake” Nourallah at the Sons of Hermann Hall in Dallas. After that, they’re off to Kansas City and a gig at a video store in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The performance-art possibilities are endless.
